From concept to painting, collaborative murals result in a unique form of 'temporary' community, providing room for experiences and experimentation. Development of ideas and images can be as meaningful as the final work, and there is an unpredictability that emerges that, although sometimes chaotic, appears as a microcosm of patterns in society.
In the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, emotions spill out from the private domain into the public. In spite of oftentimes negative portrayals and preconceptions of this part of the city, I want to project images with a sense of empowerment about them. Working in teams is a means to this end, and the resulting murals bring out the combined energies, and a positive mural. Forty murals in the downtown region can be viewed at www.vancouvermurals.ca
